Zev did not often visit the dining hall at Team Rocket's headquarters. He preferred to eat in the privacy of his own residence. But since most of his belongings were still packed up in boxes, lunch on the submarine was not entirely out of the realm of possibility.[break][break]

He did not expect to run into jayden cross there, however. The Beast and the Admin had fleeting interactions ever since the latter became the Avatar of Chien-Pao, the events surrounding Ashley Shepard's defection most notable of them.[break][break]

But between Jayden's recovery from his ordeal and the operation on Route 105, the two had little time for conversation.[break][break]

Not that they'd been good conversation partners before.[break][break]

"Have you gotten a good handle on your Avatarship and powers by now?" Zev asked, seated across from Jayden at a table.[break][break]

His lunch sat untouched in front of him. Eating still felt foreign, even though it was a perfectly natural human process.

[attr="class","textbox"] Food preparation was nearly impossible, ever since Chien Pao had struck it's influence. Jayden had yet to figure out a way to keep his powers at bay without accidentally freezing his entire kitchen.

[break][break] As a result, having others prepare food for him was the only option. And fern delaney could not always be available.

[break][break] Nor could mint frost's endless supply of Starbucks and Coldstone care packages.

[break][break] One could only sustain themselves on pure sweets for so long and besides, that was not Admin Cross' preference.

[break][break] He blinks, however, upon seeing a familiar face. Beast Harcourt. He had not met him in what felt like eons. Then again, it was not like as if Jayden had a good grasp on time at the given moment.

[break][break] One gloved hand reached for his chicken sandwich — plain as it had been the day he shared lunch with River Marx — and carefully peeled back the plastic.

[break][break] "Unclear," he said, though there was a bit more of color in his face than the day that he had been attacked by Isaac Merlo. "Yours?"

Unlike Jayden, Zev was not the kind of person to reveal weakness or uncertainty. Even as his crystals refused to stay hidden beneath his skin, even as he found acts like sleeping and eating alien to him.[break][break]

No, he was in perfect control.[break][break]

"Of course. I've had more time to get used to mine," Zev said.[break][break]

His words felt like an understatement. The powers had come readily. The countless crystal shards inside him had felt dormant, obeying his will without problems.[break][break]

But that was then.[break][break]

Absently, Zev picked at his chicken stir-fry. He had to eat. He had to. "What does it feel like? Your connection with Chien-Pao?"

[break][break] If there was anything that Jayden was grateful for when it came to Zev Harcourt's powers, it was the fact that Necrozoma had seemingly latched onto him in a way that was unlike Chu-e Choi's connection. Not that he thought the two men were similar in the least.

[break][break] For example, he had never - not once - had the urge to hold Zev Harcourt's hand.

[break][break] "That's good."

[break][break] A pause as he finished peeling the wrapper from the sandwich, opening it to the cold air. The rest of the cafeteria was silent, whether it was because they wanted to give both men the space — or perhaps it had been empty from the moment that The Cursed had walked into the room.

[break][break] "It is good to know that it has agreed more with you than Underboss Choi."

[break][break] A hand reached for the cup of water by his side. Though his gloved hand wrapped around the paper cup, the water still turned frosty by the time that it reached his lips. Still, he was used to this.

[break][break] "My connection?" he blinked, placing the cup down.

[break][break] "It feels..." It felt... it felt. Like too much and yet simultaneously like it wasn't enough. As if the Ruinous Beast had sunken it's fangs into his flesh to secure some sort of pact, and that pact had not yet been finalized. That it wouldn't be finalized until they found what it was searching for.

[break][break] Eyes flicker up to the Beast.

[break][break] "I'm not sure if can be put into words."

[break][break] A pause.

[break][break] "You feel the same, don't you?"

Zev said nothing about the comparison with Chu-e Choi as he ate his stir-fry. He'd heard it countless times by then: that Necrozma's influence had turned Chu-e into a different person entirely, willing to kill his colleagues and friends so he could sup on their infinity energy.[break][break]

On the other hand, Zev had no negative reactions or sudden personality changes after the crystals merged with his body. And he controlled them with ease.[break][break]

The Beast's explanation for the past several months had been, in his eyes, simple: Chu-e had been sickly, almost dying. In contrast, Zev was in the prime of his life. Of course his body would react more favorably than Chu-e's.[break][break]

Of course, now he knew better. Understood better. Zev and Necrozma were one and the same. He didn't know how to explain it beyond that simple fact.[break][break]

No one was more suited to becoming a god than he.[break][break]

"Hmm. You're right." Let Jayden believe they were the same.

Zev shook his head. "No. Megalopolans seem to be the only species that have conquered Ultra Space."[break][break]

The Great Filter. The answer to the Fermi Paradox. Those were the names the white-haired woman had called Zev—or had it been Necrozma? From what Zev had learned since returning, she meant that he was the limit to any civilization's advance through the stars.[break][break]

He was why no other species traveled through Ultra Space.[break][break]

"And the Megalopolans themselves aren't doing well. We know from reports that those found in the Ultra Wilds locations have lost their minds. Ultra Megalopolis is in ruins."[break][break]

He paused to chew and swallow.[break][break]

"It makes me wonder how much of a resource that city can really be to us."[break][break]

Velmos had said that Necrozma could restore the Megalopolans and their home. But ever since his encounter with the Black Knight, Zev doubted that could be possible. And he did not trust the Megalopolans, anyway.

[break][break] So little was known about Lesser Megalopolis and the Megalopolans that it wasn't a surprise that there had been little to glean from expeditions towards it. Jayden wondered how much the ones who lived in Sootopolis would be able to say on the matter.

[break][break] Jayden nodded in agreement to everything that Beast Harcourt said, knowing the reports as well as he. Though it had been a while since he had traveled to the areas with Hitoshi Inoue, the information hadn't changed.

[break][break] But what was it about the city that had turned them to ruin? What was it that had changed?

[break][break] "And I suppose we still have no idea why," he said, though it wasn't much of a question as it was a statement. Silence transferred between the two, but not one that bothered Jayden. He respected silence.

[break][break] "I wonder too," he said instead, taking a drink of water and swallowing. "But Shiny Tapu Koko is connected to it, so I wonder if the other deities can be found there."

[break][break] It was all speculation, anyway, but any information that could be found would surely be an asset to fern delaney; and for all that they did for him, he wanted to repay the effort.

Zev sat back in his chair, his lunch mostly finished. "We can make an educated guess," he said matter-of-factly. "Necrozma destroyed it as part of the rampage the DRK Triad orchestrated."[break][break]

He had theorized as much in the report he'd submitted to Team Rocket's leadership after his return from Ultra Space.[break][break]

The Beast tilted his head at the mention of fern delaney's patron. "I thought that Tapu Koko came from Lesser Megalopolis. We haven't traveled to Ultra Megalopolis yet. But it's safe to assume that both suffered the same fate for the same reasons."[break][break]

However, mention of the deities similar to Tapu Koko prompted a new train of thought.[break][break]

"If Admin Delaney is interested in finding the other Tapus in Lesser Megalopolis, then I should go with him. I know the place best of all of us," Zev mused.

Something bitter struck in his chest as a reminder of his faults, though there was no Dmitri around to make sure that he faced repercussions of it.

[break][break] "Have you spoken to the Megalopolans?" He was referring to the ones existing within Sootopolis. "Perhaps they have something to say."

[break][break] There were many Rockets who considered them abominations, including those like Alexandra Briarwood or bryan delarosa, but in a way — avatars were abominations themselves. Perhaps he or Zev Harcourt could see eye-to-eye with them.

[break][break] "You should," Jayden said, finishing the last of his sandwich and his water. "I can let them know."

[break][break] The admin thinks about what Zev Harcourt had said, what he knew about bryan delarosa and others. The megalopolis had all gone mad in Lesser Megalopolis, so who knew what fates they shared elsewhere.

[break][break] "Be careful though," he said, though such things were obvious. "Their madness might be contagious."

[break][break] His certainly was.

[break][break] He thinks about the way THEO BECKETT's eyes had gleamed with hatred, back then, from a simple touch.

At Jayden's suggestion, Zev nodded. "I've spoken with Velmos. Unfortunately, he doesn't know the details. According to him, the destruction happened centuries ago. I doubt Cotillard will provide better information."[break][break]

The Rocket Beast gathered up what remained of his lunch on his plastic tray, intending to throw them into the trash bin on his way out.[break][break]

"I think if the Megalopolans' madness were contagious, we'd know about it by now," he mused aloud. "But we'll be careful, either way."[break][break]

He stood, picking up his tray in the same motion, his critical gaze sweeping over Jayden. Something about the warning set his instincts on edge, but at that moment, Zev couldn't place why.[break][break]

Dismissing the oddity with a mental shrug, he bade the admin farewell with a callback to his powers. "I look forward to hearing more about what you can do, Cross."
